Imagine a workday streamlined by the ability to control all of your equipment wirelessly from one location. When you arrive at the warehouse in the morning, a single remote control allows you to turn on the lights, the HVAC unit, and the temperature sensors in the cooling unit, turn off the security system, take an inventory of pallets or units, and send that information to a worker making deliveries. While at work, be able to check your home for an open garage door, any lights left on, a thermostat set too high, an oven left on, the security system not set, the blinds left open, etc. When you arrive home in the evening, check your email with a wireless keyboard and mouse, bring out wireless learning toys for your children, and two-way communication with your entertainment center components with one remote control. A smart home and office with flexibility and seamless mobility, all without wires.

As a world leader in both RF and microcontrollers, Freescale is superbly qualified to introduce a platform solution for devices enabled with ZigBee technology, a network layer protocol designed to use the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The 802.15.4 standard is a specification for a cost-effective, low data rate (<250 kbps), 2.4 GHz or 868/928 MHz wireless technology designed for personal-area and device-to-device wireless networking.

Key Benefits

The worldwide operability in the 2.4 GHz band, which Freescales solution is designed to support, can simplify original equipment manufacturer (OEM) product development and certification, minimizing the need to redesign a product for various markets or regions.

Duty cycle and power conservation modes allow for long battery life, extending it to years, possibly decades. This enormous benefit helps to lower operating costs.

ZigBee technology is designed to replace costly and complicated proprietary solutions currently existing in the market and is targeted at applications that already use an MCU. That translates into a small incremental cost for designs that need only to upgrade memory onboard the MCU, not redesign to include them.

Freescale is first to sample with this solution, providing an estimated six to nine months lead time and fast time-to-market.

ZigBee technology requires a smaller stack size than Bluetooth&#8482; wireless technology. It occupies less memory on a chip, keeping costs low.

Because they are standards-based, 802.15.4 and ZigBee technologies help reduce development time for the OEM, and offer reliability, security, interoperability and certification.

Solution:

Freescale plans to offer a comprehensive platform solution consisting of an RF data modem designed to support the 2.4 GHz band of the 802.15.4 standard, paired with a microcontroller from our extensive portfolio, as well as MAC software, Z-Stack software, reference designs and tools. The software is targeted to support a broad suite of Freescale microcontrollers, allowing the end user maximum flexibility in application design,memory requirements and peripheral interfaces.

With more than 8 billion processors currently in use, Freescale s embedded electronic solutions are everywhere and permeate virtually all advanced technology applications. Freescale is the market leader in embedded microprocessors,microcontrollers and 8-bit MCUs.
Freescale has already released ZigBee-enabled members of the HCS08 family. Four cost-effective, low-power, low-voltage, high-performance 8-bit microcontrollers offer features that help extend battery life, deliver high performance when needed and integrate different peripheral and RAM/ROM combinations that make them compatible with ZigBee technology. They are the MC9S08GB32, MC9S08GB60, MC9S08GT32 and MC9S08GT60.

Freescale also has developed a family of sensors compatible with the ZigBee protocol. Designers accustomed to creating wire line control networks will find it much easier to migrate to ZigBee technology by incorporating Freescales acceleration and pressure sensors containing ZigBee technology. Based on MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) technology, the sensors use standard OEM hardware interfaces.
